Sapiens meets Neurotribes in this brand new view of humanity - one where neurodiversity is at the very heart of our story.
For years, neurodivergent traits were framed as 'broken brains', despite the lack of evidence for illness or pathology. The reality is far richer, and more fascinating.
In The Specialized Mind, Cambridge researcher Dr Adam Hunt moves past outdated theories to deliver a nuanced, deeply respectful account of how neurodiversity has, for millennia, propelled human development.
Examining seven key conditions, from ADHD and autism to dyslexia, schizophrenia and anxiety, Hunt shows how these different ways of thinking emerged not as flaws, but specialisations essential to the survival of our hunter-gatherer ancestors.
Far from reducing complex human minds to ancient survival tools, Hunt investigates the biological trade offs that underpin evolution and continue to affect us, as well as the difficulties of living in today's hyper-standardized, desk-bound world with brains that evolved for a very different environment.
The result is a stunning work that will change everything you thought you knew about the human mind.
